Left Hand Brewing and High Plains Bank Champion Independence
Longmont, Colorado is renowned as a craft beer epicenter reflected in the many craft breweries that are enjoyed by residents and visitors alike. It’s hard to go one block in any direction without being able to enjoy the bounty of the local brewing community. And leading the way since the early 1990’s is a pioneer who has become synonymous with the craft beer industry – Left Hand Brewing, located in central Longmont.

Founded on a Love of Craft Beer
Left Hand Brewing was founded in 1993 by Air Force veterans Eric Wallace and Dick Doore, who were frustrated by the lackluster beer options available, and embarked on a journey to elevate the U.S. craft beer scene. Their passion and dedication led to the establishment of Left Hand Brewing, the first brewery to operate in Longmont. The organization has expanded to include a tasting room and outdoor beer garden that hosts live music and events, and a location in Denver. Left Hand Brewing has witnessed firsthand the successes and often formidable challenges that the craft beer industry has and continues to face.

Declining craft beer sales, the ongoing consolidation of beer distributors, and a saturated marketplace all contribute to a difficult environment. Furthermore, the industry grapples with the growing influence of multinational corporations acquiring independent breweries, the expansion of chain stores, and the decline of local liquor stores.

However, this isn't the first time the craft brewing industry has felt pressure from larger entities. In the late 1990s, the craft brewing industry experienced “The Shakeout,” with industry reverberations that lasted for several years.

As they did in the 1990s, Left Hand Brewing is responding today. The organization has devised a unique solution: a consolidation platform to empower their brand and other craft beverage companies. This initiative is designed to benefit the entire Colorado craft brewing and beverage industry—from owners and employees to the communities they serve. This philosophy reflects what Eric Wallace, Left Hand Brewing’s co-founder and CEO says about the company’s ethos: "flavor-driven, employee-driven, and community-driven."

Shared Values, Shared Visions

When High Plains Bank opened its Longmont branch in 2013, a strong partnership with Left Hand Brewing was formed. Both organizations share a commitment to independence, partial employee ownership, and a profound dedication to community impact.

For both Left Hand Brewing and High Plains Bank, remaining independent is more than a slogan—it's a core value and a daily business strategy. High Plains Bank CEO John Creighton puts it this way: "Like Left Hand Brewing and the craft beer industry, High Plains Bank faces similar challenges in the financial world, and both require constant innovation. We admire Left Hand Brewing’s creative initiative to ensure the viability  of the craft beer industry for many generations to come."

Left Hand Brewing is currently engaged in a community-wide crowdfunding opportunity, through Wefunder, a platform that connects investors with early-stage startups and small businesses. Inspired by the Green Bay Packers ownership model, they are exploring a structure for community ownership, further demonstrating their commitment to their employees, the industry, and the community. This endeavor aims to raise funds to build the consolidation platform, enabling craft beverage companies to remain independent and resist the pressure to sell to multinationals through shared brewing and production capabilities.
